On the Prayer Rug
Today I got one of those phone calls you never want to get, a call letting you know that someone you know died. My roommate Sam's dad died in a freak accident this afternoon. Once the initial shock of the news wears off the racing of thoughts and emotions sets in: "Is there anything I can do to help?" or "Who do I need to call?" and the like take over the normal thought processes. I went over to my friend Liz's apartment just to have someone to talk to, and she got a call from one of our friends passing along some more news. Liz replied, "No worries, Katie and I are on the prayer rug." I cocked my head in fascination with this phrase "on the prayer rug." I know my Southern colloquialism, but this was a new one to me. As soon as Liz got off the phone, she could tell by my expression that she needed to explain herself. She told me that "on the prayer rug" was a phrase her family uses to show that they are fervently praying about something with the figurative implication that they are on bended knee. I guess the point of this blog is two fold, first to share an interesting life experience, but mainly to ask you to pray for my dear friend Sam and her family. Sam, we're on the prayer rug for y'all!
