Resolutions for 2011
I've never been one for New Year's resolutions... mainly because I suck at following through with them. This year I resolve to take an hour for myself everyday. This year is a big year for me: I'm graduating college, going to grad school, finally moving away from home, and several friends are getting married. All of this change will inevitably lead to much stress on my part, so I've decided to take better care of myself physically, mentally, and spiritually.
So here is the breakdown of My Hour:
1) Spend at least 25 minutes outside everyday not including time walking to and from classes.
- I want to be more active this year, but I've never been that good at working out. I"m hoping that I will take full advantage of being outside for at least 25 minutes and go walking around campus or through Belhaven. I have a good rain jacket and rain boots, so no matter the weather I am well equipped to spend time outside.
2) Spend 15 minutes reading the Bible or a devotional book.
- I need to spend more time with God. End of statement.
3) Sit in silence for 5 minutes.
- College is hectic and noisy. Observing and time of silence is really difficult, but this will be a great time for me to use the rosaries and centering prayers I have. Notice I said "sit" not lay down in silence... this would constitute a nap.
4) Spend 15 minutes talking to people I don't know or don't know well.
- It's pretty easy to get so caught up in "my life" and "my problems" I often miss opportunities to make meaningful connections with people I encounter on a daily basis. If we are commanded to love our neighbors as ourselves, I need to get to know my neighbors.
Along with taking an hour for myself I hope to do the following as well:
- Drink a glass of water for every soft drink and alcoholic beverage I consume... yeah I'll have to go potty every 5 minutes, but I think this will be an easy way to get my daily water intake.
- No more fast food. If for some reason I can't eat in the cafeteria I won't run to the quick and easy fast food eatery, I will eat somewhere that has healthier non-fried options.
- Ditch the ponytail. As easy and breezy as my go to up-do is, it's time to look like a grown-up and actually "do" my hair everyday... let's see if this actually happens with my 9:00 four days a week.
